Basketball recruiting roundup: Gamecocks holding in Miami hoopster’s final three
South Carolina has its eyes on 6-foot-10 Dewan Huell of Miami. USC head coach Frank Martin and assistant Lamont Evans went down Thursday to South Florida to visit him.
Huell has his list down to the Gamecocks, Miami and Florida State. He has set official visits with each: Miami Oct. 2, Florida State Oct. 9 and USC Oct. 16.
“All three are still in it,” said Huell’s coach Lawton Williams. “He likes that Coach (Martin) showed him how he’s worked with kids like him in the past. They have a great idea of his skill set and how to use it. He has a great relationship with Lamont. He has a great opportunity to play early.”
In his conversations with Martin, Williams said the Gamecocks coach told him what he likes about Huell is “his competitiveness, his skill set and toughness.” Huell scores a lot of his points around the rim and averaged 19 points, 9 rebounds and 4 blocks per game. His team has won four straight state championships.
Florida State and Miami also have been in this week. Williams said Huell right now plans to wait until the spring to make his decision, but no other schools will be involved. The decision will eventually come from one of the current final three. There is no leader, according to Williams.
