Committed receiver might not sign with Gamecocks
South Carolina wide receiver commitment Diondre Champaigne will sign with someone, but it might not be the Gamecocks.
Champaigne could sign with USC or with Jones County Junior College in Mississippi, according to Fort Dorchester coach Steve LaPrad.
LaPrad said the final decision is up to USC coach Will Muschamp. LaPrad said Champaigne wants to attend USC even if he has to go through the junior college route. Champaigne is taking the ACT again this weekend.
Champaigne (6-3, 180) in his senior season had 54 catches for 1,212 yards and 16 touchdowns. He committed to the Gamecocks last month.
The signing ceremony at Fort Dorchester will start at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday and will be streamed by the school.
Yafari Werts still waiting
USC’s Shawn Elliott was in touch with Newberry coach Phil Strickland on Tuesday and told him they still have athlete Yafari Werts on their short list and are waiting to see how some other things work out before making him an offer.
Regardless, Strickland said Werts is signing at 10 a.m. Wednesday. He has definite offers from Georgia Southern and Appalachian State and, of course, a USC offer would give him something else to think about.

▪ Former USC receiver commitment Kelvin Harmon of Palmyra, N.J., will sign with N.C. State.
