South Carolina still waiting on Montac

A copy of South Carolina's fall camp roster posted Saturday on the school's sports website included the names of transfer running back Ty'Son Williams junior college cornerback Steven Montac.

Sunday afternoon USC informed the media Montac's name should not have been on that roster.

Montac, a native of Covington, Georgia who played one season at Coffeyville Junior College in Kansas, said prior to the correction he's still waiting on his transcript from Coffeyville to make it to USC. That's why his name should not have been on the roster. He can't report until that is in, and he's hoping to be in Columbia by Tuesday at the latest.

Montac visited USC in March but did not receive an offer then. He made another visit earlier this month with former high school teammate and USC target WR Justin Marshall and it was at that point he got the word from Gamecock coach Will Muschamp that there was a spot for him in the program.

"This is a dream come true just to be coached by Coach TRob (Travaris Robinson) and Muschamp," Montac said. "And, actually playing for South Carolina, there's nothing like it. I kind of thought it would happen but after I went to the camp I knew it was going to happen."

Muschamp had planned to fill a cornerback spot with J.C. Jackson of Riverside Junior College in California, but that transfer was not allowed to go through because of SEC rules, and Jackson landed at Maryland. That allowed Montac to get another chance with the Gamecocks and he hopes to contribute early.

"The best guy is going to play and they are real high on me," Montac said. "If I do what I'm supposed to do I'll be on the field. I'll bring some more depth at corner, a competitive corner and a good lockdown man. I'll bring a great attitude and my competitiveness to the team."

Montac was a full qualifier out of high school and went to Coffeyville to improve his chances for a major college offer. USC recruited his teammate Jamarcus King and got a look at him then. He will have three years of eligibility.
