Louisville pulls scholarship for Dutch Fork star Matt Colburn
Dutch Fork running back and Mr. Football for South Carolina Matt Colburn is looking for a new college less than 48 hours before National Signing Day after Louisville pulled his offer to come in for the 2015 season and wants him to take a greyshirt.
Colburn was unable to be reached for comment but his high school coach, Tom Knotts, confirmed they were informed of the decision by Louisville on Monday morning.
“They want him to greyshirt, which is him coming in next January,” Knotts said. “That wasn’t our understanding. Matt has been committed to them almost eight months. We’re all very upset about it. Right now, we’re being proactive in trying to reach out to other schools but he really shut himself off from all the other schools relative to his recruitment. We have to get his name back out there. We’re not happy about it. We’ll see what else might pop up.”
Louisville lost three defensive backs to early entry for the NFL draft so they’ve made that a priority in the later stages of recruiting. They picked up a couple of commitments over the weekend so they had to readjust their needs.
Colburn, a 5-foot-9, 190-pounder, was a three-year starter for the Silver Foxes. He is a three-star prospect by 247Sports after rushing for 5.637 yards and 91 touchdowns in his career that saw Dutch Fork play in three straight state championship games. He also amassed 52 receptions for 728 yards and three touchdowns.
Knotts said since Colburn committed in June of 2014, they have shut down his recruitment. The option to sign with Louisville is still there but the trust factor has been lost. Knotts confirmed Colburn has an offer from Navy that is still on the table along with several other FCS offers.
“We don’t have an ACC or SEC offer yet and that’s what we’re trying to secure,” Knotts said. “He’s considering everything at this point but we’re still shocked. Those coaches might not be there in another year so it could happen again in January. The trust factor with Louisville is gone. It’s not off the table but I wouldn’t think he would consider that. I encouraged him to think about it though because signing with Louisville is still an option.”
