Decision might be looming for two-sport standout Jordyn Adams

Jordyn Adams already made one tough choice on where to play football in college.

If things go well this spring, Adams might have another one to make. The four-star receiving prospect also is an accomplished baseball player and there is a good chance he will be taken in June’s 2018 Major League Baseball Draft.

“Option is there if draft is high enough and everything is good enough,” Adams said this week at Shrine Bowl practice. “My dad and parents will talk to the advisor we have and go from there. Draft isn’t out of the question but it isn’t for sure yet either.”

Adams committed to North Carolina for football and baseball and is a rarity these days, excelling at a high level in both sports. He played in the Under Armour All-American Baseball game in August and delivered the game-winning hit at Wrigley Field.

The UNC commit also will play in next month’s U.S. Army All-American Bowl in addition to Saturday’s Shrine Bowl.

Adams played his first three seasons at Blythewood High school before transferring to Green Hope in North Carolina, where his father Deke is a defensive line coach for the Tar Heels. Deke Adams previously coached at South Carolina.

Adams’ transition to his new school was smooth. In baseball, he hit .494 with a homer, 18 RBI, five doubles and stole 26 bases. He had a school-record five stolen bases in one game.

This year on the football field, Adams moved from quarterback to receiver, a position he will play in college. He caught 54 passes for 1,060 yards and 16 total touchdowns for Green Hope, which went 10-3.

Adams also returned four punts for touchdowns, including three in a game against Cary on Oct. 6. He appeared in Sports Illustrated’s Faces in the Crowd for that feat.

“Being back at receiver felt really good overall. I’m going to be playing that position in college. I was able to work and tweak things I need to do on the next level,” Adams said.

Adams was one of the top performers during the practice leading up to the Shrine Bowl. He is looking forward to going against some familiar faces on the South Carolina squad including Irmo’s Trajan Jeffcoat and Dutch Fork’s Bryce Thompson, who he talks to on a regular basis.

“We talk throughout the season, almost every Friday before we go and warm up for our games,” Adams said of Thompson. “So for us having a chance to play against each other will be very fun.”
