Westwood defensive back Mark Mickens suffered a neck injury in Friday’s game against Clover, according to a Richland School District 2 release Tuesday.

The school district also said in a statement that Mickens, a junior, is in stable condition after undergoing surgery. The injury occurred when Mickens was making a play on the ball against a Clover receiver with five minutes remaining in the 42-14 win.

Mickens’ mother posted on her Twitter page Monday that her son’s eyes are open and he is responsive and aware. Visits are being restricted so Mickens, who goes by the nickname MJ, can rest. She also asked that no fresh flowers be sent to the room.

“We are overwhelmed by all the love and support,” Mickens’ mother tweeted.

The school district said it is closing Westwood’s practices to the media this week out of respect to Mickens’ family and teammates. Westwood (3-0), the No. 1 team in the Midlands Top 10, hosts Keenan on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

“Our team, Westwood High and our entire district continue to keep MJ and his family in our thoughts and prayers. We will continue to support MJ and his family throughout his recovery process,” Westwood coach Rodney Summers said.

Westwood players, students and those from other schools in the Midlands took to social media sending well wishes using the hash tag #PrayforMark. Banners reading “We love you Mark” and “#Markstrong” have been hung up at the school.

The RedHawk booster club has set up a fund for those who want to help with financial contributions. Any donations can be given to athletic trainer Jason Nussbaum at Westwood High School or by mail to: The RedHawk Football Club Attention: Mickens Family Fund, Post Office 722 Blythewood, SC 29016.

Mickens, who saw playing time as a sophomore, is in his first year as a starter in the secondary. He had 19 tackles, an interception and a pass breakup in three games this season.
