Eight Midlands football players selected for USA Today’s all-state team
Richland Northeast’s T.J. Brunson and Heathwood Hall’s Brandon Hill were among eight Midlands players selected to the USA TODAY High School Sports American Family Insurance ALL-USA South Carolina Football Team, released Wednesday.
Brunson and Hill, both linebackers, were selected to the first-team defense. Brunson was the Defensive MVP for the South Carolina squad in the Shrine Bowl and led the Cavaliers with 138 tackles. Hill was selected to play in the SCISA All-Star game and is a Duke commitment.
Other Midlands players were second-team selections and included Chapin tight end Will Register, Westwood linemen Torrey Boone and Chris McCarthy, Newberry offensive lineman Demarcus Gilmore, Lexington cornerback Nick Graves and River Bluff linebacker Brandon Tillmon. All players are seniors except for Register, who is a junior and committed to play at South Carolina.
Spartanburg’s Austin Scott was named the Offensive Player of the Year, and Hillcrest’s Tori Delesline was Defensive Player of the Year. Fort Dorchester’s Steve LaPrad was Coach of Year after leading the Patriots to a 15-0 record and school’s first state title.
