SC native Aziz Ansari to return home for ‘Last Minute’ performance before 2021 ends
Aziz Ansari is coming home for the holidays, but he’s bringing his work with him.
The Columbia native and award-winning writer/actor has an upcoming comedy show as a part of his “Last Minute Tour,” in his home state of South Carolina.
Ansari will perform in Charleston at the Gaillard Center on Dec. 30, according to the venue’s website.
Tickets for the show are set to go on sale to the public Friday at noon. They will be available at the box office, online at gaillardcenter.org, or by phone at 843-242-3099. Pre-sale tickets will be available beginning at noon Thursday.
Ticket prices for the show range from $63 in the balcony, to $81 on the floor and $120 in front of the stage.
Ansari, who grew up in Bennettsville, not far from the North Carolina state line, will open the tour with two shows at The Fillmore in Charlotte on Dec. 26 and 27.
Along with his work as a stand-up comedian, Ansari might be best known as the star, co-creator, writer and frequent director of the hit Netflix program “Master of None.”
The comedian first gained national prominence on NBC’s sitcom “Parks and Recreation.”
Ansari has won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in Television Series — Musical or Comedy for his role in “Master of None.” He also won two Emmy Awards for Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series for the show. Ansari was also nominated for an Emmy for his work as a director on the show.
Ansari earned a Grammy nomination for his 2019 stand-up performance “Right Now,” which was his fifth comedy special streamed on Netflix.
His performance in Charleston will be the first show in the Palmetto State for the comedian, who has incorporated his South Carolina upbringing into past acts, since September 2018.
There are a few demands being made of the audience planning on attending Ansari’s Charleston show.
The show is a phone-free event, and cellphones are required to be placed inside a lockable pouch provided by the venue. Anyone seen using a phone during the performance will be ejected, according to the Gaillard’s website.
“Guests maintain possession of their devices at all times, and can access them throughout the event only in designated Phone Use Areas within the venue,” the Gaillard’s website says.
Additionally, all ticket holders will need to provide proof of full vaccination, or a negative COVID-19 test taken within 72 hours of the show. Everyone at the venue, including staff, volunteers, and audience members (older than 2) will be required to wear a mask, except when eating or drinking, according to the Gaillard’s website.
Ticket holders who are 18 and older must also bring a photo ID.
