USC Symphony Orchestra opens season with ‘The Russian Romantics’

The first concert of the season for the University of South Carolina Symphony Orchestra features music from Russian composers Rachmaninoff and Tchaikovsky.

Accomplished pianist Marina Lomazov will play Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor with the orchestra. Lomazov has given performances worldwide. She is the Ira McKissick Koger Professor of Piano at the University of South Carolina and a Steinway Artist.

The performance is also the first concert of maestro Donald Portnoy’s farewell season. Portnoy has lead the orchestra for 31 years. He will give a pre-concert talk at 6:45 p.m.

7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Koger Center for the Arts, 1051 Greene St. $30 for the general public and senior citizens; $25 for USC faculty and staff; $8 for students. www.kogercenterforthearts.com
