Butterflies will flutter around the S.C. State House Thursday, whispering a life-saving reminder as they also honor loved ones during National Ovarian Cancer Awareness month.

The butterfly release begins at 5:30 p.m. on the steps of the State House. Participants will release hundreds of butterflies in memory or honor of a relative or friend who has been affected by ovarian cancer and other female-related cancers.

“We use butterflies because they whisper when in flight,” said Sandy Boozer, of the Ovarian Cancer Coalition of Central South Carolina. “Ovarian cancer has symptoms but they whisper.”

Women are often not aware of ovarian cancer symptoms because they sometimes mimic stomach problems.

Here are three facts about ovarian cancer:

Ovarian cancer is one of the five leading causes of cancer death in American women. Ovarian cancer occurs in approximately one in 72 women.

Each year, more than 20,000 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer and about 15,000 women die.

A Pap smear does not detect ovarian cancer (it detects cervical cancer).

“Our event is an opportunity for loved ones and friends to release a beautiful butterfly as they honor or remember someone who has been affected by ovarian cancer,” Boozer said. “It is also an opportunity to spread the message that early detection of ovarian cancer saves lives.”

There also will be musics and featured speakers. Those attending are encouraged to bring lawn chairs.

The butterfly release is a fundraiser – the butterflies are sponsored by those who want to honor or remember loved ones affected by ovarian cancer.

Funds are raised for education and awareness about this disease.

“As an ovarian cancer survivor, I want women to be aware of the symptoms of ovarian cancer and that early detection of this disease can save your life,” said Cathy Novinger, Ovarian Cancer Coalition of Central South Carolina board chair. “We want to reach as many women as possible with this message.”
