Ludwig van Beethoven retired from conducting and performing in 1811. That same year, Broadway in New York City was born.

While Beethoven never made it to Broadway – or the United States at all – the Lake Murray Symphony Orchestra is bringing the great composer and Broadway together at Harbison Theatre at Midlands Technical College.

The Lake Murray Symphony Orchestra opens its 2016-17 season Sunday with “Beethoven and Broadway,” a performance that blends Beethoven’s Symphony No. 1 and popular Broadway tunes.

“It’s not your typical classical concert,” said Kim Masters, spokesperson for Lake Murray Symphony Orchestra. “There will be variety – and a surprise at the end!”

Lake Murray Symphony Orchestra will play a medley of show tunes. There will be songs from popular Broadway Shows including “Phantom of the Opera,” “West Side Story,” Story” and “My Fair Lady.”

Doors open at 3 p.m. for the 3:30 p.m. show. The performance is for people of all ages. Children are welcome, and the theater is wheelchair accessible.

The performance is free, but Lake Murray Symphony Orchestra does accept donations.

Other scheduled performances by the Lake Murray Symphony Orchestra this season, all at the Harbison Theatre, are:

▪ Nov. 20, ’Tis the Season

▪ March 12, Spring Symphony

▪ May 21, Concertos and Cupcakes
