Main Street will be teeming with musicians this Thursday, June 1 for the WXRY Music Crawl.

The free event, which will take place during First Thursday, kicks off Make Music Month in Columbia. Nearly 30 acts spread over 10 locations will perform throughout the night.

“We want to bring people out who enjoy music and enjoy our community,” WXRY’s marketing director Jen Bailey Bergen said. WXRY is Columbia’s alternative, nonprofit radio station.

“It’s such a perfect fit. The Main Street district’s revitalization has been incredible. We’re located on Main Street and wanted a way to support the revitalization ... and celebrate the artists who are bringing music to our community,” Bergen said.

The crawl starts at 6 p.m. at the WXRY Stage at Main and Hampton streets. Mayor Steve Benjamin will make a proclamation declaring June Make Music Month in Columbia. Then the crawl will begin.

Acts include Charleston indie rockers Stop Light Observations; The Unlikely Candidates, an alt. rock quintet from Fort Worth, Texas, and Columbia stoner pop group fk mt.

WXRY’s operations manager and music community expert Kipp Shives selected the bands.

In addition to the live tunes, craft beer, hot dogs, and pizza will be available for purchase.

Swamp Cabbage Brewing Company even created a special beer for the event, the WXRY Oxbow Amber. The Whig will be tapping it.

The Unlikely Candidates singer Kyle Morris said the band is looking forward to playing as well as trying the local brews.

“Columbia has always struck us as a party town, so we are excited to be contributing to the festivities at the WXRY Crawl,” he said. TUC last played in April in Columbia.

“I’m happy to be a part of it and contribute to the vibe on the street – adding some jazz,” said Columbia jazz musician Mark Rapp. Rapp will be performing at Main Street House, where he is a regular player, during the crawl. “And I’ll drink some beer to support public radio,” he added.

“That’s going to be a fun day.”
