Watch ‘Game of Thrones’ – and sip a Knight King – at this Columbia bar
“Game of Thrones” is one of the summer’s most anticipated HBO shows. Based on a series of novels by George R. R. Martin, the fantasy drama follows nine noble families who will commit a dragon’s length of atrocities to sit on the Iron Throne and rule the seven kingdoms of Westeros.
Liberty Tap Room in the Vista discovered that many of its customers and employees follow GOT, so it’s hosting weekly Sunday night viewing parties that include cocktails created with avid viewers in mind.
“There are drinks related to certain characters and to certain things that have happened in the show,” said Kacie Silver, bartender and GOT fan. “We really tried to get the colors right with it. So, they taste good, and they apply to the colors of the actual theme that we’re going for.”
Drink offerings include:
▪ Dragon’s Fire Breath (“We will lay waste to armies and burn cities to the ground.” – Daenerys Targaryen). It’s made with Carolina Reaper vodka, ginger beer and lime juice, served on the rocks in a copper mug.
▪ Blood and Sand (“Unbowed, unbent, unbroken. The words of House Martell.” – Oberyn Martell). It’s made up of Dewars scotch, cherry brandy, orange juice and sweet vermouth and served on the rocks.
But Silver predicts the Red Woman, the Knight King and the Pyromancer’s Piss will lead the charge in popularity.
“The Red Woman is directed toward Melisandre, one of the characters in the book,” Silver said. “We use Skyy cherry vodka, lime juice, ginger ale and grenadine served on the rocks so it has that red tint.
“The Knight King, we’re leaning toward the white walkers. It’s made with Malibu, coconut, blue curacao and pineapple juice served on the rocks.
“The Pyromancer’s Piss was a big thing. They used this gel-like explosive to blow up a town, and the substance was neon green. The drink is Midori, Captain Morgan, Malibu, pineapple and blue curacao.”
With the GOT season premiere party drawing 60-plus people, the plan is to host watch parties for the season’s stretch.
“We’re all huge GOT buffs around here, so we wanted to do something that we could all be excited about and for fans who want to come watch it somewhere together,” Silver said.
