What: Yappy Hour

Where: Jake’s Bar and Grill, 2112 Devine St.

When: 4-8 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Feel bad leaving your four-legged friend at home when you go out for drinks? Take him with you – if you’re going to Jake’s, that is.

Jake’s Yappy Hour is where dog owners can sit back with a drink and some food while their pets play on the bar’s large patio. Jake’s canine clientele runs the gamut, from puppies to old dogs, Chihuahuas to Great Danes.

The beer selection is almost as diverse, with 34 taps between two indoor and outdoor bars. In addition to standbys like Budweiser and Guinness, Jake’s also features regional craft beers, including Abita Purple Haze from Louisiana and Foothills Hoppyum and Duck Rabbit Milk Stout, both from North Carolina. Most beers are $2.50 during Yappy Hour.

The menu is beyond your typical bar food, featuring exclusively local fare, including organic, sustainably grown produce and free-range, cruelty-free meat. Jake’s partners with local businesses, including City Roots, Wil-Moore Farms and Crust Bakehouse. The menu features classic bar foods like chicken wings and hamburgers, as well as innovative recipes. Wasabi pea won-tons, jalapeno-cheddar sausage and a made-from-scratch falafel are just some of the menu items that might make you forget you’re in a Five Points bar.

The Vibe

Jake’s has a laid-back, hip atmosphere only buoyed by the pack of dogs running around during Yappy Hour. There’s always ample outdoor seating for humans, plus bowls of water for canine companions. When the weather gets warmer, there’s sometimes a kiddie pool for dogs to cool off in. Come by for an appetizer or a full meal around dinner time – the menu is friendly to adventurous and cautious palates alike.

The Verdict

Yappy Hour is a great opportunity to get out of the house with your dog. Furry friends love the opportunity to play with one another, and you’ll take home one tired pup after an hour or two. And unlike the dog park, you can sit back and relax while they tire themselves out. Go ahead, enjoy a beer and some dinner.
