Columbia foodie news: Brewery tailgate, and an old favorite is back

gmelendez@thestate.com

Tailgate… at a brewery? Yes, you read that correctly.

Less than a mile away from Williams-Brice Stadium, Swamp Cabbage Brewing Company is selling season parking spots for $285. The price includes a growler with the Gamecocks’ home schedule printed on it, one fill of your favorite Swamp Cabbage brew at every home game, the use of indoor facilities (read: clean bathrooms), and indoor and outdoor seating. Add in two televisions, and there’s almost no reason to leave the parking lot.

Message Swamp Cabbage on Facebook or drop by the brewery for details.

921 Brookwood Drive. 5-9 p.m. Wednesday-Friday, noon-9 p.m. Saturday, 1-6 p.m. Sunday. (803) 939-2589, www.swampcabbagebrewing.com

Openings

Varsity Billiards on Devine Street, just off Assembly, has reopened. Once popular with USC students, the bar and restaurant closed about seven years ago after being open for almost 50 years.

New owner Mohammed Saadaddin has renovated the space and plans for a grand opening in August, according to the Free Times. In addition to the pool tables and video games, Varsity is serving burgers, hot dogs, ice cream and salads – but no alcohol.

1132 Devine St. 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 10 a.m.-11 p.m. Friday-Saturday. (803) 667-9646

Black Market Tavern opens: The bar and grill has been in the works for a while, and Aaron Klugh, who also owns Kraken Gastropub on Rosewood Drive, opened last Thursday. Expect classic cocktails, generous beer specials during happy hour, and a great menu featuring smoked wings. Oh, and a massive 80-inch high-definition TV.
