Horn ensemble plays classical, contemporary in concert
The USC Horn Ensemble will perform at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday night, March 31, in a year-end concert at the Johnson Performance Hall at the Darla Moore School of Business at the University of South Carolina. The concert features 14 French horn players performing a wide variety of music, including classical, contemporary and Bossa Nova pieces.
“This is going to be a fun concert,” said JD Shaw, associate professor of horn at the USC School of Music.
The classical portion of the concert will feature pieces by Anton Bruckner, Richard Wagner and Gioachino Rossini. The Rossini piece, “Fanfare de Chasse,” will “display the visceral quality of outdoor hunting horns,” Shaw said.
The contemporary portion of the concert features the Studio 333 Horn Choir performing the iconic theme to “Jurassic Park,” originally composed by John Williams. They will also perform a Bossa Nova version of “Fly Me To The Moon,” first popularized by Frank Sinatra; gospel song “A Quiet Place;” and combine “as many famous melodies” as possible into a three-minute “Instant Concert.”
“See how many you can name!” Shaw said.
The concert is free to the public.
