Golf + beer = A great fundraiser in Five Points
The 19th hole often refers to the spot where golfers gather for drinks after a full 18-hole round of the sport.
Long’s Bar Stool Classic combines the best of both worlds.
The Five Points Association and the Babcock Center Foundation sponsor this fundraising putt-putt bar crawl that sends “golfers” to Bar None, The Bird Dog, Delaney’s Music Pub, CJ’s, Jake’s on Devine, Delaney’s Speakeasy, Village Idiot Pizza, and Yesterdays Restaurant & Tavern to play eight different holes.
Participants are asked to dress for golf. There are prizes for those who do that the best.
We asked Amy Beth Franks, executive director of the Five Points Association, to tell us a bit about the tournament:
Q: How did the event get its name?
A: The Babcock Center Foundation used to host an event called “Million Dollar Hole in One Shootout” and still hosts a popular golf tournament called the “Annual Golf Classic,” so “The Bar Stool Classic” seemed appropriate.
Q: Can you share a bit of the event’s history?
A: The Bar Stool Classic was created by Five Points Association and Babcock Center Foundation staff in an effort to raise awareness and funds for people with lifelong disabilities.
Q: What kind of putt putt holes will there be?
A: The holes in each bar are kept fairly simple, as they must be portable and temporary. Event coordinators add dynamic obstacles each year to keep the holes challenging yet different from year to year. Players must contend with obstacles such as castles, trains, and football goals, to name a few.
Q: What makes this a fun Five Points event?
A: The Bar Stool Classic is a fun event because it allows people of all ages to move around the different businesses in Five Points while helping to raise money to support a great cause. Any time the Five Points merchants can partner up with a local charity, it’s a win for all.
