Artists of all skill levels can wet their brush and their whistle at Studio Cellar.
The bar-cum-art studio provides painters with expert instruction in a laid-back, social atmosphere. Instructors are all artists, with training from the University of South Carolina, the Savannah College of Art and Design and the Atlanta College of Art.
Studio Cellar offers at least one class dedicated to painting a certain design every day. The day’s painting varies in subject and style, but instructors are always careful to give clear, easy-to-follow instructions that novices and pros can follow. Some classes have themes, including date nights and “paint your pet.” This Friday, April 3, Studio Cellar is offering a special class featuring a live male model – don’t worry, there will be “liquid encouragement” for the shy.
Studio Cellar’s drink menu and appetizers available from nearby restaurant Blue Marlin complement the artistic offerings. Bottles of wine start at $15 and glasses of house wine are $6. The bar also offers a variety of craft beers for $4.
The Vibe
Studio Cellar is a fun activity to do on a date or with a group of friends. Instructors offer helpful feedback and work with participants to teach them new artistic tricks. Classes are laid-back and low pressure – there’s no competition to be the best in the room. The flow of wine and beer doesn’t hurt the relaxed atmosphere.
The Verdict
Studio Cellar provides a rare opportunity to flex your artistic muscles outside of the sometimes stifling environment of formal classes. You’ll leave with a souvenir to hang on your wall. Class costs vary, typically between $22 and $46. If you want to paint on your own, individual packages range from $10 to $25 and include a canvas, paints, brushes, tools and instructions.
