Artists throughout the Midlands are opening the doors to their studios this weekend for art lovers and curious patrons to get an intimate look at how and where they create their work.

Columbia Open Studios weekend is a free event sponsored by 701 Center for Contemporary Art in an effort to promote understanding and access to contemporary art. The event began in 2007 and 2008, when it was called Columbia Festival of the Arts. It was resurrected in 2011 as Columbia Open Studios.

The weekend began with a kickoff event Thursday and concludes Sunday with open studio hours from 12-6 p.m.

Participating artists include painters, sculptors, glass blowers, photographers, textile artists, mosaic artists, jewelry makers and potters. Their creative spaces range from small studios in private homes, to scenic settings that inspire their work, to studios that make creative and economical use of space.
