Time to spruce up your apartment? Need a wardrobe pick-me-up? The Junior League of Columbia is hosting its annual Clean Sweep sale on Saturday, Feb. 3, at the S.C. State Fairgrounds.

From 8 a.m. until noon, thrifters, treasure hunters, antiquers, and anybody looking for necessities at affordable prices can scour through the endless list of finds: books, furniture, appliances, electronics, handbags, jewelry, music, games, children’s toys, and clothing, linens, sporting goods…

“This year, the one new aspect that we’re really excited about is that we’ll be offering women’s clothing items,” says Lynn Cagle, Clean Sweep’s chairperson for 2018.

For the first time, JLC will be collecting formal, semiformal and day dresses and work attire from high-end brands, all of which will be for sale at affordable prices.

“I think a lot of members of the community have to stretch a dollar,” says Cagle, “There are people that come looking for necessities and items they need. … We also have thrifters that come and love to hunt for fun and unique items. It’s a nice mix.”

At noon, Clean Sweep will close for 30 minutes to prepare for the real adrenaline rush of the day: the Bag Sale.

Here’s how it works: Shoppers can buy as many bags as they want for $5 a piece. When the doors re-open at 12:30p.m., shoppers have 30 minutes to fill their bags with whatever they can fit for free.

“They can get as many books as they can fit into the bag, or clothing, or ornaments. Whatever is left over,” explains Cagle.

Not to mention, all large items left over are $5 during the bag sale. Cagle emphasizes, “If there’s a large-screen TV, it’s $5. If there’s a table, it’s $5.”

Thrill-seekers should keep in mind that the whole event is cash only, from parking ($5) to admission ($3) to all sales throughout the day.

One last piece of advice? “Get there early,” says Cagle, who notes that the line of cars leading up to the Cantey Building can start forming as early as 4:30a.m.

Proceeds from Clean Sweep will go back to the Junior League to benefit community projects in support of the health and well-being of children and families in the Midlands.
