Thursday (May 7)

First Thursdays on Main

The first Thursday of every month, on Main Street from the State House to City Hall, enjoy a series of art shows, events, entertainment, food specials and more. Many restaurants keep their doors open late.

SC Poultry Festival

Enjoy all types of chicken dishes; tacos, sandwiches, chicken on a stick and more as well as Shealy’s barbecue. Special events include an antique car show, No. 1 World’s Best Chicken Cooking Contest, chicken calling contest Saturday morning, Saturday night fireworks and more.

Taste of Black Columbia

“Spamalot”

The multiple Tony Award winner, including “Best Musical,” is lovingly ripped off from the film “Monty Python and the Holy Grail.” This show pokes fun at everyone and runs Thursdays through Sundays until May 30. No show on Mother’s Day.

Columbia Green Festival of Gardens

This year’s tour features 12 gardens, offering a variety of sizes and styles in the Wildewood neighborhood. The tour begins with a tea party and demonstrations and Master Gardeners will be on hand to answer questions.

Blooming Butterflies

Come explore the opening of EdVenture’s living exhibit and explore the world of butterflies. The exhibit will showcase nearly 20 species of butterflies native to the southeast.

“Lend Me a Tenor”

Set in September 1934, Saunders, the general manager of an opera company is primed to welcome a world famous tenor to their one night only show. A screwball comedy sure to bring tears.

Fast and Furriest 5K

This family-friendly benefit includes a 3-mile run and walk followed by food, a silent auction and bake sale to benefit FIDO, a nonprofit that rescues dogs all across the Midlands.

Sunday (May 10)

Second Sunday Stroll

Explore Columbia’s rich Civil Rights history in this walking tour down Columbia’s Main Street where many sit-ins and protests took place. $8 for adults, $5 for youth.

Duo De Vista

Duo De Vista has quickly become a popular duo, engaging audiences across the U.S. with a wide variety of music. The founding members, flutist Teri Forscher-Milter and guitarist Marina Alexandra have performed at universities, festivals and concert series.

“Entropic Perceptions”

In this exhibition, Shannon Rae Lindsey uses the 701 Center for Contemporary Art’s gallery to create a large-scale installation that responds to, and literally transforms, the traditional architecture of the space. On display through June 21.

Monday (May 11)

Paul Anderson Golf Classic

Golfers take to the fairways to give back to the Paul Anderson Youth Home, a home that has helped over 1200 young men. To register or attend, tickets are available online.

“Traditions, Change and Celebration”

This exhibit showcases objects drawn from Native American tribal museums, state museums, artist collections and more. The exhibit also looks at the expression and identity of Native American traditional arts.

Early Columbia Lecture Series

Warner Montgomery, author of “Columbia Revisited,” leads the weekly discussion covering Columbia from 1865 to 1914. Tuesday’s discussion is “Economic Development: Textiles and Agriculture.”

Wednesday (May 13)

South Carolina Arts Gala

The South Carolina Arts Foundation celebrates South Carolina’s arts community with an art sale, food and more. Art works for sale range one-of-a-kind to decorative to sculptures.

State House Tours

While the legislature is in session (January-May), free tours are offered at the state house every half hour from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Walk-in tours are welcomed and encouraged.
