5 minutes with writer and director David Axe
Columbia is a great place to make movies. At least that’s what writer and director David Axe believes.
His latest film, “Shed,” is a local affair with all the fixings of a great gory horror flick. If you are looking to get on camera in the Columbia area, you may have your shot to be on screen if you’re not afraid of fake blood and goo.
Q. For the people that don’t know you, tell us a little bit about who you are.
A. I’m a writer, editor and filmmaker in Columbia. I contribute to The Daily Beast, The National Interest and other publications. I also write nonfiction comic books, most recently “Machete Squad.”
Q. Tell us about your new film, “Shed.”
A. “Shed” is a horror movie about skin-stealing monsters. But really, it’s about love. We made the movie in Columbia and Eastover on a shoestring budget with local cast and crew. You can check it out on Facebook at facebook.com/shedthemovie.
Q. Why is it important to make movies in Columbia?
A. Columbia is a great place to make movies. It’s cheap and the area has all kinds of shooting locations, from city to forest. There are also a ton of talented folks who want to chip in and institutions such as Tapp’s Arts Center that support us.
Q. What advice could you offer to first-time indie filmmakers?
A. If you write and direct your own movies, keep them small and pay for them yourself. That way it’s possible to make a movie per year. My goal is to keep doing this until I’m good at it.
Q. What’s next for you?
A. “Shed” is on the film festival circuit. Fingers crossed for a good reception.
