Bottoms Up: Dive Bars
There’s nothing like sitting down at the neighborhood bar, enjoying a drink and feeling no pressure to be anybody other than yourself. That, in essence, is the idea behind a dive bar, and even though some watering holes wouldn’t classify themselves as such, the term “dive bar” is actually an endearing one.
The ideal dive bar feels like the cool place to hang out. It feels like your buddies’ place, even if you’ve never been there. It might even feel like you’ve been going there your whole life, even if you’ve only been there once.
Columbia has an abundance of these types of places, and though you may have your favorite already in mind, here are a few that are worth a visit:
The Whig
Across the street from the State House, down a set of stairs tucked away from the hustle and bustle of Columbia, lies this hole-in-the-wall bar that is filled with some of Columbia’s friendliest. They are well known for their relaxed atmosphere and simple way of operation. Those who have been there will tell you that a trip to “Taco Tuesday” is a must. 1200 Main St.; (803) 931-8852
Bar None
Located in Columbia’s Five Points area, Bar None is another place that feels welcoming upon entry. The bar has plenty of seats, a shuffleboard and TVs for sports. Bar None has a collection of friendly bartenders and regulars that make it easy to hang out for a while. They’re open to till sunrise, so some food and drink at 3 a.m. is common, if you’re into that sort of thing. 620 Harden St.; (803) 254-3354
Uncle Louie’s
This bar sits in Columbia’s Vista district and offers the most basic of the basic while still offering a lot. With pool tables and plenty of space to hang out, this dive bar offers the necessities. Part of the draw is the simplicity of it all, even down to the $1.25 Natural Light, served anytime the bar is open. 1125 Park St.; (803) 933-9833
