Columbia’s annual musical love song to America
First Baptist of Columbia will continue a patriotic tradition almost three decades running on Sunday when it presents the Carolina Celebration of Liberty.
The musical celebration began in 1988, when it was presented from the steps of the State House. It moved indoors in 1992 to the church sanctuary, which seats 3,400.
Organizers expect close to 10,000 people from across the state to attend this year’s two performances.
The Carolina Celebration of Liberty includes more than 400 actors, singers and musicians. It will feature the 282nd Army Band, color guards, First Baptist of Columbia’s choir and orchestra. Dramatic presentations will portray the nation’s founding fathers, and include thousands of flags and balloons. WIS-TV personality Joe Pinner will serve as emcee for the event, which will conclude with a display of indoor fireworks.
During the celebration, active duty military personnel and veterans will be asked to stand and be honored, and those who have lost their lives in service to the country will be remembered.
“It is a heart-warming, exhilarating moment to see hundreds of veterans rise to their feet as we honor them,” said Sylvia Rish, director of media ministries for First Baptist of Columbia.
Admission to The Carolina Celebration of Liberty is free, but tickets are required. Call 803-217-3250 to reserve tickets. Performances are at 4 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., and doors open one hour prior to each program. First Baptist Church is located at 1306 Hampton St. in downtown Columbia.
SCETV will air the celebration on ETV and SC Channels at 7 p.m. on July 4.
