How I Go Columbia: Lake Murray's Miriam Atria
Miriam Atria is president and CEO of regional tourism organization, Capital City/Lake Murray Country. This year marks the 26th anniversary of an event Atria created on Lake Murray – the patriotic boat parade and fireworks shows presented annually in the middle of Lake Murray on Spence Island and at Dreher Island State Park on the Fourth of July. Atria has also created numerous events over the years for the lake, as well as lured numerous major fishing events, all bringing national media attention to Columbia, Lexington and Lake Murray.
EAT: Being in the hospitality industry means working with all types of tourists and is a major reason to experience the many restaurants in the Columbia region. From a recent delicious dining experience at Figaro The Dining Room in Newberry, to enjoying the special dishes from Brandon Velie, one of the South Carolina Chef Ambassadors at Juniper in Ridge Spring. (I am) always amazed by and love the dessert creations by Chef Todd Woods at The Oak Table in Columbia and the unique sauces, atmosphere and service at Arkos Mojo Grill in Lexington.
DRINK: I enjoy Gervais & Vine, which is well known for its excellent wine list and cozy atmosphere.
PLAY: I play most of the time in my yard, enjoying flowers and keeping them healthy. There’s always a dip in the pool time or catching up with friends and enjoying Lake Murray’s beautiful sunsets.
LISTEN: The sights and sounds of our rivers can be heard every July Fourth at the Lake Murray Symphony’s concert at Saluda Shoals or on the lake by tuning into the Cumulus Network Patriotic Show. Both are great ways to celebrate the Fourth – patriotic music and the great outdoors.
SEE: Our family and pets enjoy many afternoon country rides through the rural areas around Lake Murray. It’s fun just to get out and explore the back roads. We are always coming home with new ideas for our yard after those many trips. I enjoy the holidays around the Columbia region, with the Christmas Lights at Riverbanks (Zoo) and Saluda Shoals Park. Finally, I’m always amazed to see the decorated boats on Lake Murray for the July Fourth parade. It’s exciting to see the many families and visitors out celebrating the holiday and displaying their pride in our nation’s birthday.
