Nightlife: Get your groove on at Old School Funk Party
Here’s the skinny on Friday’s Old School Funk Party.
The night features three funk acts: Cameo, Brick and Lakeside. The biggest name is R&B-funk group Cameo, formed in 1974 and led by original frontman Larry Blackmon. You might recognize their biggest number, “Word Up,” which is still in rotation on the radio.
Brick merges jazz, funk and a little disco. Their most popular hit was “Dazz,” which has been heavily sampled by hip-hop artists including Ice Cube and Snoop Dogg.
Lakeside is a funk band that formed in the late ’60s, although they are best known for their 1980 hit, “Fantastic Voyage.”
Now, before you dismiss funk as your parents’ music or a relic from bell-bottom times, consider Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars’ hit groove “Uptown Funk,” now the longest-leading Hot 100 No. 1 of the 2010s, according to Billboard. Not your average pop song, yet everyone loves it – from your kid siblings to your aunt who can still do the Hustle.
Even country artists are getting funky these days. Thomas Rhett’s new album, “Tangled Up,” is a country-funk hybrid inspired by the Ronson/Mars hit.
To further help get you in the funk mindset, Go Columbia compiled a list of ’70s slang and its modern-day counterparts.
So study up, you cool cats, then get down and boogie at the Township Auditorium all night long.
