See USC music professors in action in concert series
The Cornelia Freeman Concert Series at the University of South Carolina is an opportunity for audiences to see music professors practice what they preach.
The series, held on Sunday afternoons in the fall for more than two decades, is a fundraiser to benefit student scholarships.
The series is named for Cornelia Freeman, a longtime supporter of the USC School of Music and an advocate for music education.
The concert series, which began Sept. 6, features a diverse program of songs performed by faculty from the School of Music.
Today’s performance program includes pieces from Erno Dohnányi, Robert Schumann , Darius Milhaud, André Caplet and Tayloe Harding.
Today’s musicians include William Terwilliger on violin, Daniel Sweaney on viola, Robert Jesselson on cello, Lynn Kompass on piano, Daniel Sweaney on viola, Joseph Elleron clarinet, Clifford Leaman on alto saxophone, Jennifer Parker-Harley on flute, Rebecca Schalk Nagel on oboe, Joseph Eller on clarinet, Michael Harley on bassoon, J.D. Shaw on horn, Jennifer Parker-Harley on flute, Lynn Kompass on piano, Craig Butterfield on double bass, and Scott Herring and Brett Landry on percussion. Vocalists include mezzo-soprano Janet Hopkins and bass-baritone Jacob Will.
The Sept. 20 concert will feature the works of Franz Schubert, André Previn and William Bolcom.
The Sept. 27 concert will include pieces by Barbara York, Johannes Brahms, Scott A. Wyatt and Bert Ligon.
And on Oct. 4, the performance will include the works of Walter Rabl, Ludwig van Beethoven, Alexander Borodin and Guiseppe Verdi.
Each concert will highlight different musicians and soloists from the School of Music’s faculty.
All concerts in the series are held in the USC School of Music Recital Hall on Sundays at 3 p.m. The School of Music is at 813 Assembly St. in downtown Columbia.
Tickets for single concerts are $12 for adults; $10 for seniors citizens, USC faculty and staff; and $5 for students.
Tickets for the entire series are $50 for adults; and $40 for senior citizens, USC faculty and staff.
Reserved seating for the series is an additional $100 per series.
