USC orchestra takes on movie music at John Williams’ show

The music from movie classics will fill the Koger Center Tuesday when the University of South Carolina Symphony Orchestra takes on scores from famed composer John Williams.

The orchestra will perform nine signature editions at the “John Williams Extravaganza!” that will include selections from “Hook,” “Superman,” “Harry Potter,” “E.T.,” “Jurassic Park” and “Indiana Jones.” Guest artist Michael Ludwig will perform two violin solos to music from “Schindler’s List” and “Fiddler on the Roof.”

Williams’ contribution to film cannot be overstated.

Williams has won five Academy Awards, four Golden Globe Awards, seven British Academy Film Awards and 22 Grammy Awards. With 49 Academy Award nominations, he is the second most-nominated individual after Walt Disney.

Children and adults are encouraged to come to the show dressed as their favorite John Williams movie superhero, with prizes for the best costumes awarded during intermission.

The “John Williams Extravaganza!” with guest violinist Michael Ludwig is 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Koger Center for the Arts. Tickets are $30; $25 for seniors, USC faculty and staff; $8 for students.
