What’s good here: Pho Viet in Five Points
If edible color were a thing, it might exist at Pho Viet in Five Points.
Vibrant hues of fresh vegetables, pinkish shrimp, and neutral meats are set against a palette of stark white: rice or noodles. The presentation is enticing, as are the fragrances of lemongrass and other spices.
Popular at this Vietnamese restaurant are noodle bowls. Think large bowl of homemade soup chock full of not just noodles, but choices of beef, chicken, shrimp or vegetables. Rice vermicelli meals include Asian-style noodles with various ingredients, such as Vietnamese-style barbeque pork or beef, shrimp, chicken and tofu. These flavorful dishes are served with crispy lettuce, bean sprouts and radishes, then topped with crushed peanuts.
There are also rice plates – including one with barbecue beef spare ribs and another with salmon – and fried rice dishes.
Immerse yourself in the culture by trying a Vietnamese iced coffee, or specialty Asian beers. There are even healthy Jelly Pearl Smoothies as pick-me-ups, accompaniments to meals or dessert.
How did Pho Viet get its start?

What does the place look like?

Color is on display primarily in a bright green – fresh colors that complement the dishes. A full, detailed mural depicting Asian locales runs the length of one wall.
Even though this is a dated area in Five Points, the space has been enlivened and contemporized. Rattan lights hang from the ceiling. A large-screen television is mounted in one corner. Seating for groups of four, six and larger numbers totals around 80.

College students and professors are primary customers; however, Pho Viet also draws Columbia’s Asian population and those seeking healthy, affordable and plentiful alternatives.
