Transitions fighting homelessness with art
Transitions Homeless Recovery Center will hold its fourth annual “Reconstructing Home Art Show” during Homelessness and Hunger Awareness Week.
Using recycled materials and discarded items, clients of Transitions have created paintings that speak to their ideas of home, community, security and love. All paintings will be auctioned during the event at Tapp’s Art Center Tuesday, with proceeds split between Transitions and the artist.
About 50 pieces will be up for auction, with opening bids starting at around $10.
The artists will be on hand to talk about their work. Some have been taking art classes, which Transitions offers to help clients manage stress. Many have repainted used canvases and created something new.
“Many homeless folks don’t get a chance to create, so it’s fun for them to be given a canvas and a coach and say, ‘What can you do?’” said Transitions’ CEO Craig Currey.
There will be hors d’oeuvres from Blue Marlin and entertainment by The Jazz Guys. There will be other auction items such as dance classes and hotel stays available as well.
Since opening in June 2011, Transitions has helped 1,018 people get into permanent housing, Currey said.
“This art show raises funds to make that possible.”
5:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Skyline Room at Tapp’s Art Center, 1644 Main St., $40 http://www.eventbrite.com/e/reconstructing-home-art-show-tickets-18207153085
