Music in the Midlands: Willie Nelson, Trans-Siberian Orchestra
Willie Nelson
At 82, country icon Willie Nelson is in the sixth decade of his career and isn’t slowing down.
He’s released 10 albums in the past five years (and more than 100 overall). In June, “Django and Jimmie,” his collaboration with Merle Haggard, hit No. 1 on the Billboard country album chart.
Nelson is known as one of the founders of outlaw country, a humanitarian who helped start Farm Aid, and the creator of country standards like “Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain” and “On the Road Again.” See the singer and his beat-up Martin guitar, Trigger, at The Township Audiotrium. Devin Dawson will open.
7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20 at The Township Auditorium, 1703 Taylor St. $45-$85. www.thetownship.com
OTHERS AROUND THE MIDLANDS
Trans-Siberian Orchestra: TSO fuses rock and classical music in theatrical, multisensory shows. Expect plenty of guitar shredding, laser flashes and pyrotechnics. The band was founded in 1996 by Paul O’Neill, the driving creative force of TSO, and has been touring annually for 17 years. TSO just kicked off its winter tour and will play songs from its new album, “Letters from the Labyrinth,” released Nov. 13, as well as a selection of the group’s Christmas hits.
8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20 at Colonial Life Arena, 801 Lincoln St. $35-$72. www.coloniallifearena.com
Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox: Scott Bradlee and his band re-imagine today’s hit songs in the musical styles of older eras. Their biggest genre-bender is a cover of Miley Cyrus’ “We Can’t Stop” sung in the doo-wop style of the 1950s; it has more than 14 million YouTube views. There’s also Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ “Thrift Shop” tricked out in flapper jazz, Sam Smith’s “Stay With Me” rendered as a 1940s big-band standard, even an Eastern European take on Jason Derulo’s “Talk Dirty” (with the 2 Chainz rap done in Yiddish).
7:30 Saturday, Nov. 21 at Harbison Theatre at Midlands Technical College, 7300 College St., Irmo. $29. www.harbisontheatre.org
