Music in the Midlands: Say Brother, All About the Bass

5-band show at New Brookland Tavern

Head to New Brookland Tavern 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 8 for a night of formidable music from local and regional acts.

The lineup includes Columbia country blues band Say Brother, which combines punk energy with country twang; Charlotte indie rock quintet Junior Astronomers; Columbia folk rock group Dear Blanca; Charleston indie rock band Secret Guest; and Columbia singer-songwriter Ryan Hutchens. The show kicks off the Dear Blanca/Secret Guest tour.

“All About The Bass:” No, Meghan Trainor isn’t coming to Columbia. But a musician with equally impressive bass cred is.

Edgar Meyer, the world’s pre-eminent double bassist, will solo at the South Carolina Philharmonic’s next show, aptly titled “All About the Bass,” at the Koger Center at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 9.

Meyer is a five-time Grammy Award winner and has worked with some of the biggest names in classical and instrumental music, including Yo-Yo Ma, Joshua Bell and Bela Fleck. The New Yorker has called him “the most remarkable virtuoso in the relatively unchronicled history of his instrument.”
