5 places with classes to get you in touch with your inner artist
If your New Year’s resolution includes getting in touch with your inner artist, there are plenty of painting and drawing classes to help you do just that.
From weeks-long workshops to one-time sessions complete with wine, here are a few offerings on tap over the next several weeks.
Grapes & Gallery: This craft beer, wine and painting studio in downtown Columbia offers opportunities to join artist-led painting sessions or to paint on your own during Do Your Own Thing studio nights. This week, Allison C Fowler is in the house for evening sessions starting at $35.

Columbia Museum of Art: Among current museum learning opportunities, About Face Drawing Sessions are not led by instructors but bring together groups of artists to draw from the live model. January’s Monday and Tuesday sessions range from $10-$12 for nonmembers, $8-$10 for members, depending on day; $5 for students. Participants must be 18 or older. Among workshops offerings is Learn to Draw in a Day, on Saturday, Feb. 6, led by master draughtswoman Mary Hendrix on pencil, charcoal, conte crayon and more. $75 for nonmembers, $60 for members.

City Art: Many of the sessions offered here span more than one day and, in some cases, run for several weeks. Among upcoming offerings are Beginning/Intermediate Oil Portrait Painting with Steven Whetstone, 6-8:30 p.m. Tuesdays starting Jan. 19 for six weeks ($175); and Beginning and Intermediate Watercolor with Esther Melton, 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesdays starting Jan. 19 for six weeks ($175). The number of classes is impressive, with offerings for many skill levels.
