Abraham Lincoln, William Tecumseh Sherman and Jefferson Davis are forever intertwined in the annals of Civil War history, for more reasons than you might think.

The three politicians are bound together in layers of mystery and intrigue surrounding lost Confederate gold, the hidden caches of millions of dollars’ worth of gold that went unaccounted for after the Civil War.

Why did President Johnson’s administration believe General Sherman had been bribed with Confederate gold to let Jefferson Davis escape through North Carolina? Who were the Confederate secret agents in Canada, and why was there a reward issued for their capture after Lincoln was assassinated?

Author Pat McNeely, a retired University of South Carolina journalism professor, followed the money to address those questions in her book, “Lincoln, Sherman, Davis and the Lost Confederate Gold.”

McNeely will discuss her book Tuesday at the Richland Library St. Andrews branch. A book signing will follow.

6:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. in the Brandon LaVar Byrd Meeting Room at Richland Library St. Andrews, 2916 Broad River Road. Free. Register at www.richlandlibrary.com/events/
