Not sure how to spend your Saturday? On April 16, consider a day in Newberry.

You’ll want to start early: the Newberry Opera House Guild’s Treasure & Trash Attic Sale starts promptly at 8 a.m. at the Opera House and the bargains are sure to go quickly.

Denise Reid, chair of the Guild, said in addition to home furnishings, jewelry and kitchen pieces, bargain hunters will find doll houses, vintage handbags and even a Browning compound bow.

“All the money raised goes to the Guild, which directly supports the opera house,” she said. And if you got up so early that you skipped breakfast, the Guild’s bake sale has you covered – all cakes, pies and cookies will be sold by the slice or piece.

The Guild’s sale isn’t the only place for bargains in Newberry.

Central United Methodist Church also will be holding its attic sale, with proceeds going to the church and its ministries. The church is located four blocks from the Opera House at Friend and Caldwell streets.

After shopping, stick around for lunch, courtesy of the city of Newberry’s 10th Annual Pork in the Park. This annual barbecue competition is sanctioned by the Southern Barbecue Network and will feature 13 teams competing in Boston butt, chicken and ribs.

Tastings begin at 11a.m. in Memorial Park; tickets for food and beer tickets are available at the door; please bring cash for all purchases and ID for beer. The event also will feature the bluegrass sound of the Carolina Rebels and free activities for children.
