There’s something deeply satisfying for both the performer and the audience about choral music.

Lillian Quackenbush knows that pull – and the power – of a choir. So much so, that in 1996, she and her husband Dave founded the Sandlapper Singers, a Columbia-based choral group focused on the music of American composers. In the 20 years since its inception, the 30-voice ensemble has performed throughout the United States and Europe.

Friday, Quackenbush will conduct her last Sandlapper Singers concert. Entitled “New Beginnings,” it will be a special concert, featuring performers and classic works from the group’s 20-year history, as well as a new piece commissioned specifically for this concert.

“The program was a toughie, but pretty much boils down to Lillian’s favorite tunes,” laughs Quackenbush, who said she also asked singers and audience members for recommendations.

She’s particularly excited about the new work, which was written by Don McCullough. “It’s moving, and includes all the choral things you want to have happen,” she said. “There are quiet moments, lush harmonies and a big, rousing finish.”

Although Quackenbush is sad to be leaving the group she co-founded with her husband, she’s confident about her decision. “Twenty years is about right,” she said.

“I’m thrilled with what we’ve done and delighted to turn the reins over to Dustin Ousley, who has wonderful choral experience and is on a tenure track at Coker College.”

New Beginnings starts at 7:30 p.m. at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Irmo. Tickets are $20 at the door.
