Books on Broad celebrates Independent Bookstore Day

Books on Broad and Coffee in Camden will be celebrating Independent Bookstore Day on April 30, along with 420 independent bookstores nationwide. The literary party will have author readings, exclusive day-of merchandise and even a tattoo chain (more on that in a minute).

Independent Bookstore Day began in 2014 in California and its success reflects the resurgence in indie bookstores.

According to the American Booksellers Association, the number of member independent bookstores has increased more than 20 percent from 2009-14, and sales at indies also have increased.

At Books on Broad from 1-3 p.m. April 30, author Warren Bingham will discuss and sign his newly released book, “George Washington’s 1791 Southern Tour.”

From 3-4 p.m., Dr. Robert Kiger, a retired cardiologist and resident of Camden, will read and sign his book, “Ponderings Along the Way.”

To help boost sales, IBD will also offer exclusive items for sale at participating bookstores, including a selection of children’s books and literary accessories.

And then there will be tattoos. The first 100 visitors to Books on Broad April 30 will receive a free temporary tattoo with an excerpt from Lewis Carroll’s “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.” Other indie bookstores will do the same, with the goal of recreating the novel on the skins of 5,000 readers.

Sounds mad, you say?

In Carroll’s words, “We’re all mad here.”

7:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. Saturday, April 30 at Books on Broad, 944 Broad St., Camden. Free. www.booksonbroad.com
