Director Richard Linklater’s drug-addled dystopia, “A Scanner Darkly,” is the next film in the Science on Screen series at Nickelodeon Theatre.
Set in a future where the United States has lost the war on drugs, a deep-cover narcotics officer befriends his targets and in the process becomes addicted to a powerful hallucinogenic drug. The 2006 animated film stars Keanu Reeves, Robert Downey Jr., Winona Ryder and Woody Harrelson, and is based on the Philip K. Dick novel of the same name.
As part of the series, The Nick pairs each film with an introduction from a local expert on science, technology or medicine. On Tuesday, Dr. Steven Harrod, a professor and program director in the University of South Carolina Department of Psychology, will discuss the effects of drug abuse on the psyche.
6:30 p.m. Tuesday, at the Nickelodeon Theatre, 1607 Main St. nickelodeon.org/films/a-scanner-darkly/
