The stage at Trustus Theatre transforms into a rundown Massachusetts movie theater as actors perform a Pulitzer Prize-winning play.

“The Flick” begins at 3 p.m. Sunday at Trustus Theatre.

“It’s pushing art form in a new direction, focused on realism,” said Chad Henderson, artistic director at Trustus.

“Everyone is so ‘connected’ today. This play shows people really getting to know each other at a slower pace.”

The play’s summary: In a rundown movie theater, three underpaid employees mop the floors and attend to one of the last 35 millimeter film projectors in the state. Their tiny battles and not-so-tiny heartbreaks play out in the empty aisles, becoming more gripping than the lackluster, second-run movies on screen.

With keen insight and a finely tuned comic eye, “The Flick” is a hilarious and heartrending cry for authenticity in a fast-changing world.

“It’s a love letter to cinema,” Henderson said. “It’s amazing writing with three amazing actors.”

“The Flick” was written by Annie Baker and is directed by Dewey Scott-Wiley.

Christine Hellman stars as Rose, Ben Blazer as Sam and Kendrick Marion as Avery.

The play won the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for drama.

Tickets cost $25-$30.

Trustus Theatre is at 520 Lady St.

“The Flick” will be at Trustus Theatre until June 4.

“We’re very proud to have this show,” Henderson said.
