Children’s author Robert Beatty is having a book event Tuesday in Columbia. The Asheville-based writer will answers questions and sign copies of his latest book, “Serafina and the Twisted Staff.”

The book, a sequel to the bestselling “Serafina and the Black Cloak,” follows the life of a girl who secretly lives in the basement of the Biltmore Estate in 1899.

Serafina lives there with her father, the estate’s maintenance man, and is told she must never be seen by homeowners, Mr. and Mrs. Vanderbilt.

But soon dangerous circumstances thrust her into the light-filled world of the upstairs.

“Twisted Staff” is the second in a series of three books written for ages 8 and up. Each book mixes history, mystery and fantasy.

Columbia-area readers can get the new book at a special event from 6-9 p.m. Tuesday at the Richland Mall Barnes & Noble, 3400 Forest Drive.

The event includes a presentation by the author, a Q&A session, free refreshments, a book signing and giveaways.
