How I Go Columbia: USC grad and furniture designer Josh Cox
Greenville native Josh Cox grew up spending many summers in his grandfather’s woodworking workshop in Salem, Ohio.
In that shop, Cox learned various woodworking techniques and creative solutions to problems around his granddad’s farm, on a plot of land known as Bricker Hill.
Not long after he graduated in 2011 from the University of South Carolina, Cox decided to pursue his own lifelong passion of creating custom, contemporary furniture from a variety of materials that will last for generations. Within a year, he established Bricker & Beam, a company specializing in handcrafted furniture and named for his grandfather’s farm.
In addition to building custom furniture for commercial and residential clients, Cox launched in July his first brand extension, Bricker & Bark, which offers fine wooden dog beds and leather accessories for those looking to pamper and outfit their four-legged family members.
Cox lives in Columbia with his wife, Brittany, and dog, Coltrane.
EAT: With so many great restaurants in Columbia, it’s hard to only talk about a few. My wife, Brittany, and I are big fans of Motor Supply Co. Bistro and stop by for brunch whenever we can. Owner Eddie and Chef Wes Fulmer are top-notch, and we always love trying the ever-changing menu. Our favorite date night spot is probably Terra in West Columbia. Chef Mike Davis makes the best steak I’ve ever eaten, and it’s consistent with service and the quality of food every single time we go. Also, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention Cantina 76. Their tacos are our favorite in Columbia, and we eat there way more often than I’d like to admit.
DRINK: With a new baby on the way, we are having more mocktails than cocktails. However, I always enjoy a nice, neat glass of Bib & Tucker or Lagavulin after a long week.
PLAY: As a business owner, husband, and soon-to-be father, I don’t really get much time to relax, but the spare time I get is usually spent outdoors. I take every chance I can to go mountain biking at Harbison State Forest or walking through Congaree National Park – really any chance to find solitude and clear my mind.
LISTEN: I’m a huge fan of jazz. There’s just something about the soul, artistry, and improv of the genre that always puts me in a good mood. I feel I’m most creative when listening to jazz, and always listen to a good record when I’m designing furniture.
SEE: I’m not a big art or theater person, which may sound ironic, but I always do appreciate a good view of the river. It may make me sound like an old man to say this, but I do always enjoy taking Coltrane down to one of Columbia’s various riverwalks to hang out and be in nature. We also really enjoy Saturday strolls through Soda City Market. With so many new vendors, there’s another something fun to see, taste and experience.
