The South Carolina State Museum is open late every Tuesday night for Second Shift Twosdays.

This week there are new planetarium and laser light shows to check out as well as small group discussions for the “RACE: Why Are We So Different” exhibition. And starting Tuesday through Aug. 14, kids under 12 years old get in free.

Circles of Dialogue

Facilitator-led Circles of Dialogue are discussion groups where visitors can talk about their reactions to “RACE: Why Are We So Different?”

“Because the exhibit can be a little heavy for some guests, we wanted to make sure we provided a space for them to reflect on their emotions and experience with the exhibit and experiences they've had related to the exhibit in their personal life,” public relations manager Jared Glover said. 7 p.m.

New planetarium shows

Live Sky: This presentation will identify constellations, planets and other celestial objects that grace the skies above Columbia. Guests will learn how the sky changes over the course of the night and journey through space to Venus, Mars, Jupiter, The Pleiades, and The Orion Nebula. 6 p.m.

Laser iPop: Features a laser light show set to popular music by various artists. 7 p.m.

Coming soon: Book Club

In conjunction with its new blockbuster exhibit, “RACE: Are We So Different?,” the South Carolina State Museum, in partnership with Richland Library, will host a special book club with group discussions on “The Girl Who Fell From the Sky,” by Heidi W. Durrow. The book tells the story of Rachel, the daughter of a Danish mother and black G.I., growing up in the 1980s and exploring her racial identity. 6:30 p.m. Aug. 9

General admission for Second Shift Twosday is 2 for $10 for the public and free for museum members. (Note: Planetarium and 4-D theaters shows are an additional $5 each.)
