Soul singer Jill Scott will perform Saturday, Aug. 27 at The Township.

The Philly songstress jumped back into music recently with “Woman,” her first album in four years.

Scott made her debut in 2000 with the platinum album “Who Is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds Vol. 1,” which included popular tracks “A Long Walk” and “Hate On Me.”

Her latest album is said to be just as authoritative, with Scott’s powerful voice still intact, but slightly more subdued and slow-jammy.

Before you go, here are five things to know about Jill Scott:

1. She has won three Grammys.

▪ A 2005 Grammy for Best Urban/Alternative R&B Performance for “Cross My Mind”

▪ A 2007 Grammy for Best Traditional R&B Performance for “God Bless the Child” (with George Benson and Al Jarreau)

▪ A 2008 Grammy for Best Urban/Alternative Performance for “Daydreamin’” (with Lupe Fiasco)

2. She helped popularize the neo-soul genre.

Neo soul is a contemporary fusion of R&B and soul. Artists like Alicia Keys, Lauryn Hill and John Legend have been described as neo-soul artists, as has Jill Scott.

3. She has a background in poetry.

Scott began her performing career as a spoken word artist. That got her noticed by Amir “Questlove” Thompson of the Roots, with whom Scott collaborated on a song that helped her segue into singing.

In 2005, she released a personal poetry collection called “The Moments, the Minutes, the Hours.”

It’s not surprising that she opens the album “Woman” with a spoken-word song.

4. She’s acted in movies and TV shows.

Scott has had numerous TV and film roles over the years. She had a role in 2007’s “Hounddog” with Dakota Fanning, in Tyler Perry’s “Why Did I Get Married” and “Why Did I Get Married Too,” as well as appearances on “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” and “The Voice.”

Her most prominent role to date is in the James Brown biopic “Get On Up,” where she plays Brown’s second wife.

5. She isn’t afraid to get personal.

Scott tends to be open and talkative during her live shows, often discussing intimate topics. At a recent show at the Apollo Theater in New York, she talked about her struggles to become a mother, her marriage and how happy she is to be the breadwinner of her family.
