Friends & Neighbors playing first SC concert
Friends & Neighbors, a Norwegian jazz quintet, will play its ir first S.C. concert Wednesday at 701 Center for Contemporary Art.
Known in European jazz circles, Friends & Neighbors consists of Thomas Johansson on trumpet, Andre Roligheten on sax and clarinet; Oscar Gronberg on piano; Jon Rune Strom on double bass; and Tollef Ostvang on drums. Friends & Neighbors musicians have played with Trondheim Jazzorkester, Frode Gjerstad trio, Albatrosh and Cortex.
Norway’s largest daily, Aftenposten, wrote of the band’s latest album, “Hymn for a Hungry Nation:” “Friends & Neighbors stands out as a key player in in the continuation of what was created by Ornette Coleman’s free music (jazz) scene of the ’60s. Youthful maturity and close interaction is the quintet’s precondition for success.”
Admission to Wednesday’s 8 p.m. performance at 701 Whaley St. is $10 for 701 CCA members and $12 for non-members.
