Keisa Hudson was born with an entrepreneurial spirit in her blood. Growing up, Hudson saw the success of both her parents running their own businesses – her dad as a State Farm insurance agent and her mother as a self-employed accountant.
That spirit led Hudson to open her first business, Bare Wax Studio Salon, in Florence in 2013.
On Thursday, Aug. 18, Hudson opened another business – Style Encore women’s consignment shop at 1150 Bower Parkway, off Harbison Boulevard. Part of a national chain, Style Encore buys and sells gently used, in-fashion women’s clothing and accessories.
For 11 years prior to running her own businesses, Hudson traveled the nation with her husband, retired Major League Baseball player Orlando Hudson, who played for teams such as the Toronto Blue Jays, Los Angeles Dodgers, Arizona Diamondbacks, Minnesota Twins, San Diego Padres and Chicago White Sox.
Also a mother of three, Hudson is pursuing a doctorate in business from Minneapolis-based Walden University.
EAT: When I’m at Style Encore, my go-to lunch spot is Wild Wing Cafe for their Wild Chef Salad with grilled chicken, julienne ham, Monterery Jack and cheddar cheese strips and spicy shrimp. I also frequently make sure to enjoy dessert at Marble Slab Creamery. My ultimate favorite is the sweet cream ice cream.
DRINK: I would have to say my favorite drink of choice for now is Bang, which is a natural energy beverage found at Vitamin Shoppe. This beverage helps me to manage my day even after long nights of research and writing required in my doctoral business program at Walden University. As for a night on the town, my husband and I do date nights in Columbia. We’re not big drinkers, but once in a while, I like to have a mango mojito in my hand. I can’t say I have a favorite day or night spot. We have kids, so whenever we get some alone time, we just take it and go!
PLAY: My son plays travel baseball and basketball, so we’re constantly in the Columbia-Lexington area on the weekends to watch him and his team play. We enjoy tailgating and taking the family to University of South Carolina football games. And our kids are big fans of the Riverbanks Zoo and Gardens and jumping at Plex Hi Wire.
LISTEN: We often find ourselves at concerts, music venues and comedy clubs. We enjoy everything from R&B and old-school music to gospel concerts. Our most recent concert was Chris Brown at the Carolina Coliseum at University of South Carolina. We’ve also seen Mary J. Blige at the Florence Civic Center. Someone we always make sure to see when they come around is New Edition. The last time we saw them, we made a trip down to Atlanta just to get our groove on.
SEE: My husband and I always enjoy taking the kids up to see a movie at The Big Mo, the outdoor drive-in movie theater in Monetta, for some fun but relaxing family time.
