To mark the sesquicentennial, or 150th anniversary, of the founding of Columbia as both a city and South Carolina’s capital, a time capsule was buried at the city courthouse in 1936 and opened in 1986.

The contents of the time capsule are on display in a new exhibition at McKissick Museum called “Looking Back/Looking Ahead: Columbia’s Sesquicentennial Time Capsule.”

The exhibition at the University of South Carolina features photographs, programs, souvenirs, and even the cover of the time capsule itself.

See it now through Dec. 17 in the third floor lobby of McKissick Museum, 816 Bull St.

The museum is open from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. weekdays, 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturdays. Admission is free.
