The smoke continues to rise for a popular West Columbia barbecue spot.

City Limits Barbeque, located at 1119 Methodist Park Road in West Columbia, landed on Southern Living’s recently published Best New Barbecue Joints of 2024 list. There were 22 barbecue spots from across the Southeast on the list, which was compiled by noted food author Robert F Moss.

City Limits, owned by pitmaster Robbie Robinson, came in at No. 4. City Limits is known for its Texas-style brisket, Carolina-style pork barbecue and a host of decadent sides and desserts. It was the only Midlands restaurant to make the list.

In the Southern Living rankings, Moss heralded City Limits for its pork ribs, calling them the “showstoppers.”

“Cooked two hours over direct coals and seasoned with nothing more than salt, they have a stunningly rich bite that makes them, hands down, the best ribs in the Carolinas — and may be even in all of the South,” Moss wrote.

Four barbecue restaurants from other parts of South Carolina also were on Southern Living’s recent list, including Charleston’s Palmira Barbecue (No. 1), Charleston’s King BBQ (No. 5), Charleston’s Rancho Lewis (No. 14), and Spartanburg’s Smoking Butt Heads BBQ (No. 16).

Robinson started City Limits as a food truck back in 2016. Then, in 2023, City Limits found a more permanent, brick-and-mortar location on Methodist Park Road in West Columbia. The restaurant received national acclaim earlier this year, as Robinson was a finalist for Best Chef - Southeast at the heralded James Beard Foundation Awards.
