This national business is planning a location near Columbia’s Harbison Target

A growing national banking company is planning a location along one Columbia’s busiest commercial corridors.

Fifth Third Bank, which has branches across a number of states, is prepping a new location at 146 Harbison Blvd. There was a sign posted in front of the building there when a reporter went by recently that touts the coming Fifth Third branch and says “New bank taking shape.”

Building permits for the Fifth Third Harbison location also are listed in city of Columbia records, stating the project will include “renovation of an existing building into a banking center with drive thru.” An opening date for the Harbison branch has not been publicly announced.

The building at 146 Harbison was formerly a FedEx office.

There are nearly 1,100 Fifth Third locations across 12 states, according to the company’s website. Some of those states include South Carolina, Ohio, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and Tennessee, among others.

The bank location at 146 Harbison Blvd. will be in the midst of one of Columbia’s most enduring retail areas. It will be situated in front of the section of the Columbiana Station shopping center that includes a Target, a Publix, an Old Navy, a TJ Maxx, a Sierra and many other businesses.

The larger Harbison district west of Interstate 26 is lined with a number of amenities, including restaurants, hotels, big box stores, shops, movie theaters, the Columbiana Centre mall and more. About 28,000 cars per day travel down Harbison Boulevard, per state Department of Transportation statistics.
