70-year-old driver who died after hitting tree near National Guard base identified

Officials identified the driver who died after his vehicle struck a tree near a National Gaurd base near Hopkins Tuesday afternoon.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts said Oscar A. Alexander, 70, of Horrell Hill Road in Hopkins died in the single-vehicle wreck.

Alexander drove off the road and struck a tree around 4:50 p.m. Tuesday on Garners Ferry Road near Louis Leconte Road near McEntire Joint National Guard Base, officials said.

He was transported to Palmetto Health Richland hospital, where he died at 5:44 p.m. in the emergency department.

Watts said Alexander was wearing a seat belt at the time of the wreck.

An autopsy indicated he died from multiple trauma, according to Watts.

Highway Patrol continues to investigate this wreck.
