A driver died after hitting a tree in Richland County on Tuesday evening.

The man killed in the crash was identified as Jeffery Curtis Carter, according to a news release from Richland County Coroner Gary Watts.

The 58-year-old Eastover man was not wearing a seat belt and died of “complications of injuries received in a motor vehicle collision,” Watts said in the news release.

The crash happened around 7:45 p.m. on Congress Road in the Hopkins area, according to Cpl. Sonny Collins of the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Carter was driving a Toyota north on Congress Road when the vehicle went off the right side of the roadway and hit a tree, Collins said.

Richland County EMS transported Carter to an area hospital “where he died at 8:47 p.m.,” according to Watts’ news release.

Both Watts’ office and the S.C. Highway Patrol are continuing to investigate the deadly crash.

This was the second deadly collision in the Midlands area in less than an hour Tuesday. A pedestrian was hit and killed near Cayce around 7 p.m.
